Alissa Bourne is a great model who loves minimalism and basics! I hope you’ll enjoy the interview;
How did you fall in love with modeling?
After being on set with so many talented creatives, I was hooked! There’s an amazing energy, and I loved actualizing someone’s vision–whether it’s a fantastical editorial or for a commercial client.
How were you discovered?
Friends and family told me to give modeling a shot, and I traveled back-and-forth from Maryland to NYC the summer after college graduation. Searching for a casting call in Chelsea, I stumbled into the wrong suite and into a boutique agency’s open call. They signed me that day!
What’s one of the most interesting shoots that you’ve done?
I did a Slimfast commercial with Peggy Sirota: a massively talented photographer. The audition required me to dance around freely, but the shoot revolved around interacting with props–like a Great Dane, balloons, etc. I was one of the last models to get on set that day, so I was assigned a skateboard. In addition to me dancing with/on a skateboard, production had to push and drag me around the stage to get motion shots. It was so much fun!
How would you define your personal style?
Minimal. I love black basics.
Where did you grow up? How have your roots influenced your sense of style?
I grew up in Howard County, Maryland. It was a preppy, athletic town; kids went from their Abercrombie & Fitch duds to their sports apparel. I didn’t really have my own sense of style then; I was a tomboy who emulated her friend’s fashions.
Who is your style icon and why?
If I had to pick someone, it would be Kate Moss. Our style sensibilities are similar, and she looks cool and put together in her most casual attire.
Who is your favorite photographer and why?
Richard Avedon. He captured the essence of a person in his photographs.
What advice would you give to aspiring models out there?
You’re never too good for any job (unless they want you to do anything absurd or uncomfortable; I’m speaking more from a monetary standpoint). In the beginning, I was hustling for any work I could get just so I could be on set and build my book. It gave me great work ethic and stamina, and I have a much wider network of people because I wanted to work with everybody. I’ve seen people take off even since doing tiny projects with them back in the day.
Do you edit your own photos? If yes, which programs do you use?
VSCO
