Carina McClelland is a German model who got discovered when she was 17. I hope you’ll enjoy the interview;
How did you fall in love with modeling?
I got scouted when I was 17.
How were you discovered?
I was shopping in my hometown in Germany, and a model scout asked me if I’d be interested in taking some test shoots at the agency he worked for.
What’s one of the most interesting shoots that you’ve done?
I’ve done a commercial shoot for a water brand. The motto was kind of “zero gravity”, so they set up this giant trampoline in a gym. It was a lot of fun (and a great work out at the same time.
How would you define your personal style?
Oh, that’s a hard one. It really depends on my mood. Can we say leather jacket, meets ball gown, meets sneakers?
Where did you grow up? How have your roots influenced your sense of style?
I grew up in a small town in Germany, close to the dutch border. I was born in Düsseldorf, which, in my opinion, is a city with a very fancy street style, almost like Munich (but without the Dirndls and Lederhosen). I definitely have a fable for fancy handbags, which probably developed from baby Carina seeing too many Chanel and Louis Vuitton bags on the streets of my hometown.
Who is your style icon and why?
I love Elsa Hosk. Her street style is always effortless and stylish. On the other hand I have kind of a girl crush on Alena Shishkova, a former Miss Russia contestant. She has this supernatural fairy look, that I love.
Who is your favorite photographer and why?
100% Mario Testino. While a lot of photographers have one signature way to take photos, he always comes up with something new.
What advice would you give to aspiring models out there?
Be professional and easy to work with, but don’t let anyone treat you like a punching bag. If you’re told you’re too fat, too skinny, too this, too that: don’t listen to them. You’ll never be able to please everyone, so find people in the industry that value you the way you are!
Do you edit your own photos? If yes, which programs do you use?
I like whitagram for the framing, but besides that I usually only use the instagram filters. My favourite is probably “Ludwig”.
We would like to express our gratitude to Carina McClelland for this great interview.
