Christi Mcgarry

Christi McGarry is a Filipino-American beauty pageant titleholder and a real queen.

I hope you’ll enjoy the interview;

How did you fall in love with modeling?

Seeing all the creative editorials in magazines since I was a little girl. The magic made between the model photographers and creative directors has always been something that enchants me.

How were you discovered?

Walking into a vintage store when I was 16. Then later I furthered my career in the industry after placing in the Miss Philippines National pageant.

What’s one of the most interesting shoots that you’ve done?

Definitely an underwater shoot I did for a group of photography students in Los Angeles. It was my first time to shoot underwater and turned out to be more of a challenge than one would expect!

How would you define your personal style?

I like modern minimal chic pieces with rock n roll touches.

Where did you grow up? How have your roots influenced your sense of style?

I grew in and around New York City- which has definitely influenced my style and personality in general. New Yorkers I think have a natural sense of ease and raw confidence and style- and I also incorporate a lot of black in my wardrobe- which has been pretty much me and my friends’ uniform since high school, and still is.

Who is your style icon and why?

I’ve always looked up to Stevie Nicks during her Fleetwood Mac era- not only in the sense of fashion, but in her overall whimsical style and individuality- being a woman in the rock n roll scene dominated by men, and owning it.

As far as today, i’ve really been admiring fashion model Elsa Hosk’s choices in outfits. She’s able to shift through different styles tastefully and I find my personal style very similar to hers.

Who is your favorite photographer and why?

Respect the art of Tim Walker and the stories he tells through his images.

But my favorite photographer i’ve worked with is definitely Philippines based photographer Doc Marlon- who’s brought out the best model in me and I truly do admire all his work.

Also; Paul Nicklen, David Bellemere, Alex Covo, Joel Sartore, Luigi and Iango 🙂

What advice would you give to aspiring models out there?

Practice, love yourself, feel beautiful, and be yourself. It’s not always only looks that get you work- you’ve got to shine in and out.

Do you edit your own photos? If yes, which programs do you use?

I do for most- I use all different types of editing apps and options. Sometimes just within iphone x’s built in editing software, and instagrams, but mostly VSCO X & Afterlight. I’ve also played around with HUJI and Snapseed.

We would like to express our gratitude to Christi McGarry for this great interview.
