Emily Elizabeth May is a beautiful model from Australia. I hope you’ll enjoy the interview;
How did you fall in love with modeling?
The amazing people I get to meet from all over the world has been the main reason for falling in love with the job!
How were you discovered?
I was working as a waitress in a cafe when I was 17. A policeman came in and told me he had a friend who was a model and I reminded him of her. He gave me her details to get in contact with her. I did. She told her agency about me, who then told me to come in and see them. They’re still my agency now, almost 10 years later.
What’s one of the most interesting shoots that you’ve done?
I did a nude shoot for Rankin in the UK, covered head to toe in gold paint, oil & honey.
I was placed on a clear perspex board that was lit up from underneath. I had to try to hold my posses on the perspex without slipping… but I was covered in honey & oil…
I’m not sure if that’s interesting or just weird.
How would you define your personal style?
My style heavily reflects my mood or the ‘character’ I want to be that day. Some days I dress head to toe in black and try to boss it. The next I am in a cute yellow dress. And the next I am in trainers, a dress and a jumper. Whatever feels right to my mood.
Where did you grow up? How have your roots influenced your sense of style?
I grew up in Melbourne, Australia. I think my roots have influenced the fact that I prefer summer fashion to winter fashion!
But after spending 6 years in London, I am slowly warming to winter fashion more. I didn’t really know much about clothes until I moved to London, I was definitely influenced heavily there by other models, and the fashion of the Londoners & Europeans.
Who is your style icon and why?
Alex Chung – sorry if that’s cliche. She just looks good in everything. She got me into skirts & jumpers which is now one of my favourite trends.
Who is your favorite photographer and why?
Ellen von Unwerth – she captures a moment with so much attitude. Her photos all feel like they should have a story behind them.
What advice would you give to aspiring models out there?
I wouldn’t sugar coat it. It’s hard work, it’s painful, it’s heartbreaking… but it’s all worth it!
Just to simply know that it’s not all what it seems to be portrayed as, I think, is a great way to walk into the industry.
You will have to get used to rejection and critisism on a daily basis. But just stay strong, and know that you are amazing and you can do anything.
And just to add, your attitude is just as important as your looks. You can be the most beautiful woman at the casting, but if you have a reputation for being hard to work with, rude or obnoxious on jobs, a lot of clients will decide to go with someone else.
Do you edit your own photos? If yes, which programs do you use?
Yes. vsco for lighting, & facetune (for the odd spot here and there)
