Masha Rudenko is a Russian super model and a photo artist. I hope you’ll enjoy the interview;
How did you fall in love with modeling?
Modeling for me can be like performance art. Sometimes, when I’m working with a creative photographer, I’ll create a new soul and character and integrate my look into the photo story. I love the process as much as the result . It’s a magic to see how different models can transform on-camera. So I like to play with it and have as much fun as possible.
How were you discovered?
I went to support a friend at the audition for the Elite Model Look Contest in Russia . When the Elite team saw me , they thought I’d come to try out as well. I was surprised when they asked me to audition and walk the catwalk. In the end, I was selected and my friend wasn’t. She was upset by that and thought I had somehow sabotaged her efforts. It ruined our friendship. Even so, it turned out for the best as it changed my life for the better.
What’s one of the most interesting shoots that you’ve done?
Peru . I was shooting on the top of Machu Picchu. I was so impressed and inspired by the place. It has a magnetic energy that’s unlike anywhere I’ve ever been. As an artist, it opened creative doors inside of me.
Another interesting shoot was my own art project called; “Mashpit. ” I transformed myself using body paint, into various characters that intrigue me. People such as Woody Allen, Jim Morrison, Putin , Frida Kahlo, Jimi Hendrix. Through a combination of acting and modeling, I tried my best to channel some of the character traits on my subjects. How would you define your personal style?
I love smart/casual. Blazer, jeans and sneakers or small, high-heels. I love to feel comfortable with what I wear. Cool accessories can also help; belts, jewelry or sunglasses that make the overall look more interesting in unique. I’m also quite fond of men’s shirts, vintage rock and roll t-shirts and classic leather jackets.
Where did you grow up? How have your roots influenced your sense of style?
I grew up in Taganrog, Russia, the birth place of Chechov. Russian woman love to dress well and take care of themselves .
When I started working in fashion, I learned a lot about style. And how you dress can depend on where you live. LA style is much different than Paris or Moscow. Less is more in some environments. It’s important to find your own style and create a basic wardrobe of classic pieces that you can mix and wear anywhere .
Who is your style icon and why?
Rosie Huntington Whitley . She exudes cool-elegance with an effortless style.
Who is your favorite photographer and why?
Tim Walker. I love his story-telling photoshoots. Only beauty is boring if there’s no story on the picture. Tim is experimental in that way. It’s my dream to shoot with him one day.
What advice would you give to aspiring models out there?
Eat healthy and don’t starve yourself. You can lose weight when you eat clean foods. Surround yourself with positive people who build you up. Read, learn, be curious, kind and professional. Modeling doesn’t last long – so make the best of it and don’t take it personal when and if you’re rejected . It happens to everyone. Nothing is wrong with you – it’s a fashion market , they love new faces. Have a second career in mind and hobby that inspires you. Don’t spend all your time on your phone or Instagram. Get outdoors, visit museums, travel and find a sport you enjoy. Above all, learn from people and never be afraid to ask the questions.
