I hope you’ll enjoy the interview;
How did you fall in love with photography?
Ever since I got my first little point-and-shoot camera for my birthday one year, I have been in love with photography.
How important is having a unique style as a photographer? How would you describe your style?
It is so important to find your voice in your art. My style is outdoorsy, and vintage feeling.
Where did you grow up? How have your roots influenced your sense of style?
I grew up just a few miles from the Buffalo National River. I think spending the summers outdoors really helped shape my style. It’s where I honestly my skills and now I try to do all my photos outdoors because there is no better backdrop than nature.
What advice would you give to aspiring photographers out there?
Try not to compare your photography to anyone else’s. I used to do it, and I would get so down because I thought I wasn’t as good as a lot of the people I looked to for inspiration. You just have to realize everyone has their own style and it takes time to develop your art to a place you feel confident in it.
Have you ever run out of ideas?
Yes, sometimes I will get in a creative rut where I don’t feel inspired. But I just take a step back and try to find some new inspiration or think of some new ideas.
How do you find places and models for your shootings?
Most of my models for my personal work are friends of mine and I really love shooting with people I already have a connection with. I find new places to shoot just by traveling and hiking.
What’s the one piece of photo gear you couldn’t live without?
Probably a tripod. Shooting outdoors can get really windy sometimes and having something to stabilize your camera really comes in handy.
Do you edit your photos? If yes, which programs do you use?
Yes, I love using Lightroom to edit all my photos now.
We would like to express our gratitude to Nick Chapman for this great interview.
