Nienke Van Der Peet , in her own words; “Yes I’m tall. No I don’t play basketball, the weather is exactly the same up in Sydney & yes I’m a model” :).I hope you’ll enjoy the interview;
How did you fall in love with modeling?
I love the creative vibe and how things like light, make up and poses etc can change an image
How were you discovered?
I got scouted a few times but I was always too big. I entered a competition of Glamour magazine and Herbal Essences and I won. As a prize I got to do a shoot in Spain. The stylist of the shoot told me that Models1 had opened a plus size (now called curve) division. I went to see them and they signed me.
What’s one of the most interesting shoots that you’ve done?
Most fun have been the swim and lingerie shoots. Especially when we get to go to a beautiful location like Curacao.
How would you define your personal style?
Relaxed and fun.
Where did you grow up? How have your roots influenced your sense of style?
In a smallish town in the Netherlands. It was quite boring and I couldn’t wait to leave (I moved abroad at 17). Since then I’ve lived in 10 different countries. They’ve all influenced me a little. And I now shop a lot more vintage just because a lot of shops sell the same type stuff and I like the quirky one of a kind type things you can find in vintage stores.
Who is your style icon and why?
Rihanna. Do you really need to ask why? 😉
Who is your favorite photographer and why?
Amy Hibbard. She’s a joy to shoot with and love her images.
What advice would you give to aspiring models out there?
Have other things going on as well. Other passions and streams of income. It takes the pressure off and it’s good to have other experiences for when modelling ends.
Do you edit your own photos? If yes, which programs do you use?
Not much, a little light/saturation/contrast with VSCO
We would like to express our gratitude to Nienke Van Der Peet for this great interview.
