Raul is a successful Barcelona based photographer. His moody and dark photography style will take you into an old-time cinema.
I hope you’ll enjoy the interview;
How did you fall in love with photography?
Photography is a lifestyle for me. Creating photographs has allowed me to meet people, discover incredible places and improve myself. Photography is everything in my life, it’s my job and my leisure. Also, it’s the way to mix the objectivity of a documentary and the subjectivity of art.
How important is having a unique style as a photographer? How would you describe your style?
Style is what defines you. It’s the originality, what makes you unique. Finding my own style has been an arduous task. Currently, I think I have not yet found the final style. However, my photographs are defined by being ‘mood’ and ‘dark’. My initial style was more colorful but now I have opted for a more cinematic style, with more muted colors and black as the main color.
Where did you grow up? How have your roots influenced your sense of style?
I’m from Barcelona, in Spain. My city is very modern and combines many artistic styles. All this has made me opt for urban photography in most cases.
What advice would you give to aspiring photographers out there?
Practice, practice and practice. What makes a professional good is the experience. I think it’s good to try new things and make mistakes. This will make you good at any type of photography. To master programs and make your own presets, you need to edit each day until you find the dream style.
Have you ever run out of ideas?
There are days without creativity. When it happened to me, I did two things. The first is to rest and not be overwhelmed. The second is to take the camera and go to an unknown place in order to search a different photo.
How do you find places and for your shootings?
I try to find known people. Another method is to put a story on Instagram. To find a location, I search places in Google or watch videos of people who can inspire me
What’s the one piece of photo gear you couldn’t live without?
The most important piece is my 24-85mm Nikon lens. It’s very versatile and allows me to have a wide range of focal lengths. It’s an all-in-one. Also, it allows me to use filters like UV, polarized or ND.
Do you edit your photos? If yes, which programs do you use?
Yes, I always edit my photos to get my own style. I always use Lightroom and sometimes Photoshop.
We would like to express our gratitude to Raul for this great interview.
