Ryoji Iwata is fascinated with taking great pictures with iPhone and created various works using iPhone and digital single lens reflex. He also joined on Apple’s “Shot on iPhone” campaign in 2017. That photo has been posted as billboard advertisement in 25 countries around the world.

How did you fall in love with photography?
I started photography when I got iPhone4. I’ve take photos with it for a long time. It is so fun for me to create works I imagine with only one device. It had me to thrown myself into photography. Now I use DSLR and Lightroom to create my works.
How important is having a unique style as a photographer? How would you describe your style?
There are so many similar images on instagram as you know. Having a unique style as a photographer means having unique personality. I can’t be satisfied with create similar images other people do. I don’t need any stuffs it means nothing except main subjects. Minimal elements and composition is really important for my photographs.
Where did you grow up? How have your roots influenced your sense of style?
I grew up in nature. My home town is saga prefecture it located south part of japan. There are beautiful mountains,rivers and sea. I always explored nature surrounds me. It sharped my senses.
What advice would you give to aspiring photographers out there?
Taking interests in many things around you. It is important to be inspired by music, movies,arts,architectures and so on.
Have you ever run out of ideas?
Yes. when I run out of ideas, I stop taking photo and just walk around the city. seeing a street scene with my eyes not through the lens gives me different feelings I never got with camera.
How do you find places and for your shootings?
Just walking around the city. I always walk around the city about 10km on weekend.
What’s the one piece of photo gear you couldn’t live without?
70-200mm lens. It’s my favorite.
Do you edit your photos? If yes, which programs do you use?
I use Lightroom CC.
