Saúl Aguilar is a a great photographer from Mexico who lives in Paris.
I hope you’ll enjoy the interview;
How did you fall in love with photography?
I feel in love with photography more than 8 years ago when I moved in Paris. The city, its architecture, its people and couture are fascinating and very photogenic
How important is having a unique style as a photographer? How would you describe your style?
It’s very important because it is what makes you different and special from others. I can photograph from a leaf on the floor to a landscape or a model. My photos have bright colors. I love to share the beauty around me, most of the times from a different point of view
Where did you grow up? How have your roots influenced your sense of style?
I grew up in Mexico City, I lived there 20 years of my life. Then I went to USA for a while and then I moved to Paris. What have influenced my style is the diversity of cultures and points of view from the places I’ve been.
What advice would you give to aspiring photographers out there?
1. Study, learn how master your camera and tools.
2. Practice! Take photos every day.
3. Learn new things, new ways to take photos or new ways of editing. Never think you “know everything”. There is always something new to learn.
The correct way of thinking is this: “My best photo is the one I will take tomorrow”
Have you ever run out of ideas?
No never, there is always something around that could be taken in photo. Of you think you’re stuck, travel. Traveling has helped me to see the diversity of ideas, cultures and points of view and it helped me to make more and better photos.
How do you find places and models for your shootings?
I’m lucky because every corner in Paris is a good place to make a photo so I don’t need to look to far to find something interesting. Today I don’t find models, they find me. They like my photos and style and they look for me. When I started I used social media to show my work and find models.
What’s the one piece of photo gear you couldn’t live without?
A camera. It could be a DSLR or a smart phone. The gear doesn’t make a good photo. What makes a good photo is what is 5cm behind the camera… YOU! But if I could choose, I would choose my Canon 5D mark4 and the Sigma Art 50mm 1.4 lens.
Do you edit your photos? If yes, which programs do you use?
Yes I edit my photos. I use Lightroom and photoshop
