Tyler James is a Chicago based great photographer. I hope you’ll enjoy the interview;
How did you fall in love with photography?
When I was a kid my dream was to become a magician and an actor however I was never good at slight of hand and acting in this day in age is very competitive. I discovered photoshop when i was 15 years old and realized that with this tool i can take a photo and turn it into anything i wanted it was basically like magic and i loved that! So when i picked up my first camera I realized that i can create the same kind of stories and emotions and moods that i would try to portray with acting and literally make them into anything i wanted and then keep that moment forever!
How important is having a unique style as a photographer? How would you describe your style?
I would say style is important however with my pictures i don’t ever try to go for a certain “look” or style as in i never try and force it i just try to go with what looks and feels right to me and try to get the best result with the picture i have. Someone once described my style as “elegant but edgy “
Where did you grow up? How have your roots influenced your sense of style?
I grew up in cary North Carolina but my love for theater and acting and performance in general have influenced my style the most.
What advice would you give to aspiring photographers out there?
Go with what feels right!
Have you ever run out of ideas?
Impossible! everyone you work with will bring something different to the table. work with what you have and you will always have new and fresh ideas!
How do you find places and models for your shootings?
Places are difficult mainly because a lot of locations charge way to much to rent there spaces so i go on location walks around the city so i can find good places to use and i also ask the people i work with if they know of any cool new places they would like to shoot at! Being in the entertainment world there is never a short of dancers or actors to work with just ask the people you know to help spread the world that you are looking for people to work with!
What’s the one piece of photo gear you couldn’t live without?
i use a 24-70 mm lens for almost all my shoots it can capture almost anything you need it to!
Do you edit your photos? If yes, which programs do you use?
yes i do i actually started editing before i even picked up a camera. i would have friends send me there pictures and i would edit those for them. i mainly use photoshop and Lightroom but i use a variety of other programs because i like different features in each.
